Second grade students enter the year with a wide array of reading levels. Some are reading books proficiently while others are still emerging with their reading skills and strategies. Through our balanced literacy approach, second graders improve their reading accuracy and fluency, while learning how to integrate sources of meaning, knowing that reading is not merely reading the words but also understanding the text. Students learn how to select "Just Right" texts for their reading level and how to respond to their reading by jotting on sticky notes or writing in their Reader's Notebook. Second graders are explicitly taught comprehension strategies for fiction and non-fiction texts. They learn how to be good reading partners and share their observations with each other.
