Word Study


The second grade word study curriculum emphasizes spelling development over time through skills instruction, everyday writing, and study of specific words not yet mastered. Using a spelling inventory, we formally assess students three times a year to determine their spelling stage. Based on this information, we strategically group students and teach accordingly using Words Their Way sorts as a guide. Students engage in hands-on sorting and multi-sensory activities, discovering patterns that assist in decoding and spelling. Students are held accountable for high-frequency words and spelling patterns. Students explore nouns, verbs, adjectives, contractions, homophones, and similes.
